September 11, 2008 NURSERY TALES CHALLENGE
Make a quilt based on your favorite Fairy Tale or Nursery Rhyme.

RULES:These are the rules for the quilt challenges
Size Requirement : any size up to and NOT exceeding 45" on any side
You may use any technique that you wish to construct your quilt
The quilt must be in 3 layers, but it doesn't necessarily have to be traditional construction
The edges of the quilt must be closed. Use any method such as traditional binding, zigzag, etc.

August 15, 2008 CHRISTMAS TREE SKIRT CHALLENGE - To benefit Genesis House. Make a tree skirt any shape. The first place winner will be donated to our auction. And all other entries will be used for the Genesis House Tree skirts in the coming years.

KITTY KAPERS CHALLENGE - UFO SHOW & TELL

All of my favorite cats have been quilted. Challenge yourself by quilting a cat for our Kitty Capers Challenge.

UFO SHOW AND TELL

We could actually have one of our most successful show and tells by bringing in things we HAVEN'T finished. I know I have many more things started than I have finished. I would say that we could make a pact that we would finish everything before the end of the year.. but I would never do it. So, clean out all of those dusty spaces that you have shoved unfinished quilt tops or whatever and drag them to guild on February 14th.. have a good excuse ready!

JANUARY MEETING

For Community Service at the January meeting, please bring scissors, large eye needles or curved needles (if you have them). I will bring tops, batting, backing and thread. No sewing machines needed at this time.Also at this meeting, we will have an "Amnesty Night". This is where if you have blocks, strips, kits that you took home to complete and have not, you may bring them back and there will be no questions or comments made.Please don't stay home, come and have some great conversation, fun and feel good about accomplishing a project.If you have some spare time and could come over to my house to help me precut batting, I truly would appreciate the help. (quilted article or any other craft) Which led us to another thought.... Also for Show-n-Tell for December, Show us something you have made or tell us about your "other" hobby or craft that you have done in the past year of 2007. After our Pot-Luck dinner that starts at 6:00, we'll have the "Grand" Show-n-Tell which will be a great program in itself.

NOVEMBER MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Thank you to all of the members that made ornaments for the Genesis House Tree. The theme this year is A Quilter's Christmas. Genesis House trees will be decorated the Monday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 26) at Spring Valley Country Club on Gulf Road in Elyria starting at 9:00 AM.

This is our second place winner in the Pincushion Challenge. A heart with blanket stitched wool felt.

This is the first place winner. It was surprising to find out that each of the red 'petals' that surround the center tomato are actually individual pincushions that fit on your finger.

BIG THINGS GOING ON IN SEPTEMBER

Our raffle quilt is hanging at Birds of a Feather Quilt shop -36840 Detroit Road it Avon. Stop by and take a look. On September 8th and 9th is Avon's Fall Festival, and we will be at Birds of a Feather selling tickets on Saturday morning.

There is a display some of the Twisted Stitcher's Miniature Quilts at the Domonkas Branch of Lorain Public Library which is located on Lake Road in Sheffield Lake. It will be there for the month of September.

RAFFLE QUILT - PIECEMAKER'S PUZZLE

Our guild raffle quilt is finished. I have been given permission to sell tickets at the Ohio Outdoor Quilt Festival at Bonnie Brae Farms on August 11th. The show is from 10am until 4pm. If anyone would like to come out and help me sell tickets I would really appreciate it. If you have some extra time, or you are going to the show anyway, please contact Teri B. You don't have to spend the whole day, I'd take an hour of your time if you have it.

AUGUST MEETING

The August meeting will be a fun time to socialize with other guild members and show off what you have been working on all summer. Please bring food to share. Drinks, and eating utensils will be provided.

Teri W. Has a fabric swap/purchase planned. She brought some of the fabric to guild last evening. I had my eye on a purple bundle she had.. but she got away before I could ask her about it. Here are the details:

Please bring 1 and 1/4 yards of baby friendly fabric (or more to swapmore). Cheery, brights, novelty, soft florals, baby friendly, etc. ( Whatever you would choose to make a baby quilt for a special boy or girl.) 100% cotton or flannel only. No holiday/seasonal fabrics. So check your stash or use your Joann's coupon.A 1 1/4yd of fabric and you can choose a bundle. $5.00 and you can buy two, yes count 'em, two bundles of fabric. Want 4bundles, fantastic! and so on!Each bundle will contain 3 yards of fabrics in like colors. Example: abundle of shades of green, a bundle of shades of blue, etc.This is a great way to help with the baby quilt process and add to yourstash.This Swap a bundle will take place at the August potluck. Last night Gayle Pritchard was our speaker. She spoke to us about the roots of art quilting being in Ohio. It was an informative lecture, and I learned many things about the origins of art quilting that I didn't know before. This is Gayle with her book on Ohio Art Quilt History.

NEXT CHALLENGE DATE CHANGE

Our next challenge is WHY I PREFER THE MONTHS THAT END IN 'ER' This challenge will be due at the September meeting, a month that actually DOES end in 'er'. This challenge is to complete a piece up to 40" to a side, that represents your favorite thing about the months at the end of the year. This could be Christmas, Thanksgiving, Hannukah, Halloween, Autumn, Winter.. you pick your reason.

JULY MEETING

Gail Pritchard will be visiting us to speak about the Art Quilt movement in Ohio. We are trying to get some of her books to sell at the meeting.

FORMER CHALLENGE PIECES

Will be needed for the small quilt show that will be taking place at the Amherst Public Library from August 13th until August 25th. The Library is located at 221 Spring Street in Amherst.

If you made a quilt for any of the challenges, starting with the self-portrait challenge through the Novel Idea Challenge, please bring them to the August meeting. If it is okay with you, we would like to hang onto them until after the guild quilt show at the Metroparks (September).

BABY QUILT CHALLENGE FROM THE JUNE MEETING

The baby quilt challenge brought in many quilts from guild members. It was the largest turnout yet for any of the challenges

We also worked on baby quilts at the meeting that night. Teri W. had everything planned perfectly, and I think that we got many quilts done.

It's always hard to vote for just one of the challenge quilts because they all are so great, but we only have 3 top prizes and the 3 top vote getting quilts in the baby quilt challenge were:

QUILT SHOW UPDATE

Dear Piecemakers,

Here are the details about our show. At the August meeting, I'll give out
pins you can put the titles of the quilts in (like our name tags) and
forms to fill out for each quilt. I suppose we should limit the number of
full-size quilts per person to two, because I remember we had that limit
in the past; however, Judy Dudukovich at French Creek tells me the space
we'll be using, which locks, by the way, has been enlarged and includes
!A WATERFALL!
It would be terrific if some of you would like to make your Genesis House
"A Quilter's Christmas" quilt block ornaments early so we could have a
"scale model" of our tree at the show. Also jolly and good would be
displays of some of our challenge quilts plus minishows of minigroups
(Ditto Chicks, Twisted Stitchers, and the art quilters who meet at Ritter
Library, for instance, and in fact any of you who sew together).

Please make your label pins for the show and attach them and the paperwork
to your show quilts and I'll collect them at the September 13 meeting to
hang Friday, Sept. 14, from 10:00 a.m. I'm not great with ladder work and
will appreciate all the help I can get hanging them (we'll have white
gloves). There will be ballots at the show for Viewer's Choice, and a
ribbon created by the estimable Tessa "Teri" Barile, and it will be
terrific to have plenty of our members there enjoying the show, hanging
out together, answering questions, and handling the quilts with and giving
out white cotton gloves.

MAY UPDATE

We had a beautiful sunny day for our workshop with Patsy Thompson. It was held at the Nordson Depot.It were only a small group of participants, but we learned a lot. It was like having a private instructor for machine quilting. Patsy was a good teacher and very prepared with lots of samples. She had notebooks full of quilting examples and she brought a lot of her beautiful quilts. Our next program is community service baby quilts and the Baby quilt Challenge. In July is Gayle Pritchard

JUNE PROGRAM

GLAD TO BE MAKING QUILTS AND NOT BABIES - Baby Quilt Challenge

This Challenge is different than prior challenges because the quilts will be going to community service. But there will still be ribbons and prizes awarded as in the other challenges.

Rules:

No larger than 50" to a side and no smaller than 36" to a side.
Your quilt can be square or rectangular
Novelty fabric or baby print fabric of 100" cottons or flannels can be used
Your quilt may be tied, but cut the tails short so that they don't wind around little fingers.

Bring your machine and an extension cord and help piece tops, or bring a needle appropriate for tying quilts.

CHALLENGE RESULTS

We had a tie for second place. This quilt was made by Kaye K.

The other Second place winner was "Books on Tape" a quilt made by Kim M, Teri W.and Barb L.

This is the third place winner by Nancy T.

We are finding that the challenges are fun. Not everyone takes part, but the people that do find that they are tapping their sleepy creativity. Consider taking part in a challenge. It's fun.

UPDATE: I neglected to put the only other two challenge quilts in the blog. They were wonderful quilts and I wanted everyone to see them.

Our next challenge is going to be a different challenge because the quilts will be donated for community service. It is titled

THE I'M GLAD TO BE MAKING QUILTS AND NOT BABIES- BABY QUILT CHALLENGE -Due at the June 14th meeting

This challenge is for making baby quilts for Community Service

Guild Rules:

If you are feeling like you've mastered stippling and would like to take your free-motion quilting to a new level, then this intermediate to advanced free motion machine quilting class is for you! In this hands-on class, you will learn basic techniques to improve your control of the quilt sandwich, and then you will master several new quilting designs to expand your repertoire. Using the "Fast and Free" technique, you will learn how to create infinite "spin-off" designs from one basic quilting pattern! Learn how to make your quilts really sing by adding a new design element with your quilting!

Debbie has been quilting for as long as she can remember. She started as a drapery seamstress and then started her own professional longarm quilting business – Ta Dah. Debbie has longarmed thousands of quilts for a diverse customer base. Her customers include family, friends, charities, and many famous designers. Debbie’s quilting has appeared in numerous issues of the McCall’s Quilting and McCall’s Quick Quilts magazines. But she still wasn’t satisfied. She still had a love for design and now Debbie’s business has transitioned into designing quilts for McCall’s magazines, Michael Miller fabrics, Westminster Fiber fabrics, and YOU.

APRIL 12:

Noella from QUILTER'S SOURCE will bring in patterns and talk to us about quilted bags and purses made from Lazy Girl patterns. I saw her at the Lakewood guild's show and she has many fun and interesting items in her shop.

MAY 10:

Patsy Thompson PATSY THOMPSON DESIGNS Will be doing a program AND a workshop.

Patsy Thompson was raised in an eastern suburb of Cleveland, Ohio and enjoyed many types of craftwork from an early age. She first learned to sew in a six-week sewing course at the local Singer store, and she’s been hooked ever since! Initially a self-taught quilter in the late 1970’s, Patsy’s early ignorance of many of the rules of quilting led her down some new paths of discovery, learning all the joy and exhilaration that come with experimentation. Subsequent classes in numerous quilting techniques have fueled her fire and she now delights in the challenge of placing a new “spin” on different techniques.
Patsy was a hand quilter for her first 25-plus years in quilting and struggled to learn the art of free motion machine quilting. It wasn’t easy! Once mastered, free motion machine quilting became a wonderful creative outlet and Patsy now travels to teach and pass along her free motion mastery to others. The overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from her students has prompted her to create these series of instructional DVD’s on free motion machine quilting. Her work has been exhibited in quilt shows and juried exhibitions across the United States, including the American Quilter’s Society show in Paducah, Kentucky.

Patsy will be teaching a workshop the same day, which will be held at the Nord Depot. I will have the information available at the March meeting.

JUNE 14:

Teri Whidden will be doing our program. Which will be for community service. I will update you later with all of the information

JULY 12: (TENTATIVE)

GAYLE PRITCHARD will be speaking to us for our March meeting. She graciously agreed to come to our guild on short notice. And will speak about her research of the Art Quilt in Ohio. Click on her name. It is a link to her website.

Ohio has a central role in the art quilt movement. We are lucky to be able to have Gayle come to tell us about what she learned in researching for her book

AUGUST 9:

Potluck and Fun with Labels. We have moved our label meeting to this meeting. By that time, we will be able to have many examples of labels that you can put on your quilts.

APRIL MEETING.

I am having problems with Blogger. I can't change the type, and I can't upload pictures. Just wanted to tell you all to check the guild photo album. You can find the link on the right. I have uploaded pictures from last night's meeting.

The MARCH meeting will be on making labels for your quilts. Our members, Kim M. Kaye K. and Teri B. will lead the program. I would like to ask any members who have made interesting labels for their quilts, to please bring them to show at the meeting.

We will be asking members to volunteer to be on a nominating committee to find new officers. We are going to need a new President, Vice President, and Secretary. Libby will continue as treasurer. Our officers are only obligated to a maximum two year term. I think that our guild is at a place that new officers will have help if they need it. It is not a difficult job. I know that everyone is busy, but Susan and I both work and do the officer thing, so it can be done. There are many talented women in our guild that would be great as officers. Please think about it. Program/V.P. is probably the most challenging job. And the most important to line someone up early. This coming year, we have found several people that will be on a "Program Committee". The work of finding speakers/programs can be divided up between them, but we need a Vice President to be the 'head' of the committee. I am going to plan programs to the August meeting. We need people to start program pretty soon to line people up from September on. I need someone to hand all of the program materials over to. That's why I was so keen to talk about it last night (a month before the bylaws allow. I know that it takes sometimes several month's advance notice to line someone up for a program, and I want to give the new person a head start at it because I am getting worn down and I am ready to do other things for the guild. Challenges, raffle quil, and whatever else comes up.
Actually, Northcoast Needlers has a first and second V.P. They hold a one year term. For instance, the first V.P. books all of the programs for 2006-2007, and the second VP books all of the programs for 2007-2008. Each year they get a new VP and the second VP moves to the first position, having already booked all of her programs for her year. That is why they can list all of their programs for the year in the newsletter in September. The person who booked them, didn't have to do anything but book programs for one year, and the next year she would have to be available once a month around the meeting time to deal with the person they got for their program/workshops. I think this is a good idea, and I would like to bring it up to the group. Think about your ideas so we can discuss it next month.

FRENCH COUNTRY WORKSHOP

What a place! What a gal! What a design!Julie Bragg is, as you'd suspect, as good at teaching as she is at everything else. Nordson Depot, where we met for her French Country Quilt class today, is a gorgeous preserved and restored train depot that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. My great-grandmother loved to tell anyone she caught looking in a mirror, "You can't make a rose out of a cabbage leaf." Well, Julie can: no matter how far from the desired dimensions your quilted top has roamed, she can show you how to compensate for the error and scallop it after all, and she can do that without making you feel like a moron. I'm so relieved I didn't give up after the 27th error on the same project; thank you, Julie; it was a pleasure.

February Challenge - "On the Contrary" Contrary Wife Challenge

RULES:

1. You must use at least one Contrary Wife block in your quilt. This block can be any size.
2. You may use any technique that you wish to construct your quilt
3. The quilt must be 3 layers, and the edges of the quilt must be closed – use any method such as traditional binding, zigzag, etc.
4. Size Requirement: any size, not to exceed 45” on any edge

Place your challenge piece on the membership table. They will be displayed and voted on by guild members.

The "on the Contrary" Challenge will be held. Some of our members will demonstrate easy quilt blocks. More info to come.

We will have PATSY THOMPSON do a workshop on free motion quilting, and then a program. The workshop is 5 hours and will be held at around 11am until 4:30. Exact details TBA. This is not a class to teach beginning quilters free motion quilting. You do not have to be an expert, but you should have tried some free motion quilting prior to this class.

MERRY FISHMAS - BAH HUMBUG

Join us for the fishtivities!!
Monday, November 27th at 9:00 a.m. At Independence Village of Avon Lake, 345 Lear Road. We will be continuing in the annual tradition of decorating the Christmas Tree that will be auctioned to benefit Genesis House, a local women's shelter. Every year our guild picks a theme, and members make ornaments for the tree. This year the theme is "Christmas on Lake Erie", also known a "Merry Fishmas". Don't worry girls, next year's theme will be "A Quilter's Christmas".

The December 14th Christmas Potluck meeting will start at
6:00 p.m.
Please bring a dish to share.

The auction was a great success. We would like to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who participated. Everyone who made something for the auction, everyone who helped hang quilts, or came to help the day of the auction, or BOUGHT something. We need members like you to keep our guild running!

We have some small items left over from the auction that we will sell for 50% off the original prices. They will be available at the December meeting and will make great last minute gifts. Great for a teacher or co-worker gift.

Please turn in all of the money and tickets for the Civil War Raffle Quilt at the begining of the meeting. We will draw the winning ticket later during the meeting.

If you have anything you would like to sell, and couldn't make it to the November Rummage Sale Meeting, feel free to bring your items to the December Meeting.

We would like to do a special Christmas Show and Tell, as an addition to our regular show and tell. We would like you to bring all of your Christmas Theme quilts etc. They can be big, small, finished or unfinished.

I hope that you all had a great Thanksgiving and that you aren't running yourselves ragged for Christmas. Take a day off and join us for laughs, and food. One evening a month that you can share time with others that understand your obsession with fabric!

Tuesday, November 7, from 10:30 a.m., is the date for hanging the auction quilts, etc., at the FAVA Gallery, Oberlin.

Preview for the auction quilts will be from Tuesday until the day of the auction.

THE LORAIN COUNTY PIECEMAKER SMALL QUILT AUCTION will take place on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2006 at 2:00 pm at FAVA ART GALLERY, 39 south Main Street , Oberlin. Parking is behind the Fava Gallery in the parking lot off of college street.

GUILD RAFFLE QUILT

This Civil War Sampler quilt will be raffled at the December meeting. We would appreciate it if every member would sell 10 tickets at $1.00 each. Tickets will be distributed at the October 12th meeting. And the money will be due to the guild by the December Meeting.
This quilt is about 53 inches square and was machine quilted by Sue Stang.

OCTOBER 12, 2006 MEETING

Our October program will be Dee Dadik, AQS Certified quilt appraiser. She will be doing her program called THE PRICE IS RIGHT? WHAT IS YOUR QUILT WORTH?
We discuss the reasons for, the types of, and the component parts of an appraisal.
We bring quilts from many time periods ( 1830's to present)
The attendees may record their values for our quilts before we give the correct value. The attendee with the most correct answers will recieve a free appraisal.
Care and use information sheets are given to each attendee.
